Pumped Up Kicks: Nike Is Killing Midnight Releases and Creating a New Twitter RSVP System to Sell Shoes

The hype machine behind Nike shoe releases is only rivaled by Apple product releases, which is usually a good thing! But recently, riots on shoe release days have caused The Swoosh to re-think its launch strategy. So much so that Nike has killed off midnight releases at its stores and will be using Twitter to sell its shoes.
It's a crazy bold move that'll definitely change how popular, high-demand shoes are sold for Nike (for shoeheads, at least). For one, there won't be any week long line ups at Nike Stores. Also, Nike is putting the strain of its demand onto its Twitter accounts now and using these releases to make Nike Stores accounts must follows (again, for shoeheads).
Here's how the new Twitter RSVP system works:
On the RSVP date, our store will send a tweet at a random time to begin our Twitter RSVP process, including a product specific hashtag (#tag).
Once registration is open, you must Direct Message ("DM") the store within 60 minutes. The DM must include:
• The product-specific #tag tweeted by the store
• The last 4 digits of your State/Passport/Military/School ID number
• Your shoe size (limit one).
Confirmations from the store will be sent via DM to those who have successfully secured their requested size. Shoes will be awarded on a "first respond, first serve" basis.
Once confirmed (or more likely, if confirmed), you'll have to pick up the shoe from the Nike Store on launch day. If you don't, the unclaimed shoe will go back into the Twitter RSVP system. This policy only effects Nike Stores (Foot Lockers, for example, can still do what it wants) but it's sort of amazing/bizarre to see a company try an unproven method of selling its product while losing the free publicity that line ups provide.

Pizza Hut Middle East offerings now include the "Crown Crust Cheese Burger" pizza and "Crown Crust Chicken Fillet" pizza. "The most royal pizza ever!" the ad proclaims.

So, how does one go about creating a cheeseburger pizza? Mini cheeseburger patties are set along pizza crust and covered with melted cheese. Then the round center of the pizza is topped with beef and vegetables and drizzled with Pizza Hut's special sauce.
A similar method is employed for the chicken fillet pizza. Chicken strips and a smattering of onions and green peppers are barely contained within the borders of a chicken nugget-laden crust. For a finishing touch, BBQ sauce is drizzled on top.
This isn't the first time that Pizza Hut Middle East has dabbled into unique culinary territory. It previously offered a Crown Crust pizza that alternated meatballs and cream cheese.
"The chefs at Pizza Hut make it great with pizzas featuring different toppings and styles to match global tastes," Pizza Hut told HealthPop in an emailed statement. "The crown crust pizza is a limited time offering for our Middle East audience."
But, maybe it's just the U.S. that isn't jumping on this one pizza fits all toppings idea. There's the hot dog-stuffed crust pizza in the U.K. that HealthPop previously reported on. In Mayalsia, Pizza Hut has breaded their cheese-stuffed crust with cornflakes has offered Fish Prawn King pizza, which comes topped with Alaskan Pollock fish fingers, King Prawns, mozzarella cheese and pineapple with a lime mayo sauce. House of Hoops is a joint retail venture between Nike and Foot Locker that began in Harlem, New York. Having since expanded nationwide and even in to Europe, the House of Hoops program involves releasing special Player Edition hoops shoes, limited colorways and more. Guam's footlocker in the Micronesia Mall just opened one TODAY! With the grand opening, so came the release of the Jordan Retros 3, 3-Flip, 4, and 12. OFOSHO.net was on hand for the event and staffer, Big Toe Tim, was able to walk out with two pairs of J's.

Last month, 20-year-old Michael Baker of Jenkens, Kentucky, thought he’d get his jollies stealing gasoline from a police car. He and his girlfriend thought it was such a riot that she snapped a photo of him posing, siphoning gas and giving the finger.
And then he posted it to Facebook, of course, because, hey, pilfering from the police is some good times…
The pic made its way around the community, eventually coming onto the screens and into the hands of the Jenkins Police Department, who responded with an arrest warrant and an arrest this past Monday.
Baker posted bail yesterday, so though the picture is no longer on his Facebook page, he himself is. And he’s having a good time, too, it seems… In response to a friend who hadn’t seen the pic yet, he posted, “yea lol u would just have to seen it it was funny as hell tho.” Read more here via Twenty Two Words

Six mannequin torsos — three wearing Chicago Bulls jerseys and three with Boston Celtics jerseys — sat on tables in front of N.B.A. owners in a meeting room at the St. Regis hotel in Manhattan.
The jerseys were unlike any that the Bulls and the Celtics wear. All had a corporate name or logo — and were sartorial harbingers of the N.B.A.’s future.
The presentation to the league’s board of governors last Thursday night strongly suggested that the N.B.A. might be the first of the four more established major leagues in the United States to allow its players to wear advertising. If the N.B.A. agrees, its players will join golfers, soccer players around the world, including those in Major League Soccer, and Nascar and IndyCar drivers.
And some W.N.B.A. players have worn corporate logos or names since 2009.
Jeanie Buss, the Los Angeles Lakers’ executive vice president for business operations, said that adding advertising to uniforms was worth discussing in part because other leagues had embraced the practice.
“I like tradition and I actually still miss the short shorts of the ’80s,” she said in an e-mail, “so perhaps it is better the Lakers management fully discuss the subject internally and come to a consensus.”
For years, N.B.A., M.L.B., N.F.L. and N.H.L. teams have changed their uniform styles and designs to increase merchandise sales, keep up with fashion trends or herald a new era, as the Miami Marlins just did. Patches have been added to remember a former player or manager who died. But advertising has not broken through. After Major League Baseball considered putting logos on players’ sleeves in 1999, Commissioner Bud Selig rejected the idea.
Adam Silver, the N.B.A.’s deputy commissioner, said in an e-mail: “If we add sponsor logos to jerseys, we recognize that some of our fans will think we’ve lost our minds. But the N.B.A. is a global business and logos on jerseys are well established in other sports and commonplace outside the U.S.”
At last Thursday’s presentation, jerseys for the Bulls and the Celtics displayed three variations: a jersey with the team name stripped away and replaced by a corporate name; a second with a company name beneath the uniform number; and a third with the corporation’s logo on the jersey strap. In addition to seeing the jersey-clad mannequins, owners were briefed on the finances of deals between English Premier League soccer teams and jersey sponsors. A four-year $120-million sponsorship between Manchester United and Aon includes the right to put the global financial services firm’s name on the club’s jerseys, replacing A.I.G. Four men charged for Dededo store robbery

FOUR male suspects were arrested in connection with the burglary of Island Rice Mini Mart in Dededo, just after midnight Tuesday.
Prior to the incident, police had received a tip from a caller who informed them that a man dressed as a woman with a gun in his purse was near the vicinity.
The suspect, who police later encountered in female attire, was identified as Alexander Palieasei, 24. The other suspects involved in the incident are Jeremy Jonsin Gamboa, Jerald Gamboa, and Anthony Mark Tedtaotao Gumataotao Jr.
According to Superior Court of Guam documents, police responded to the reported burglary at around 1:55 a.m. on Tuesday. As they canvassed the area for suspects, they apprehended the suspects, beginning with a woman and Gumataotao near Wettengel Elementary School.
Police then encountered Jeremy Gamboa who was near shopping carts full of cold beer and snack items, court documents stated.
While at the rugby field, police were approached by Palieasei, who explained the events leading up to the burglary.
“Palieasei, described as a male attired as a female, stated that his ex-boyfriend ‘Tom’ had called police,” court documents indicated. “Palieasei and Tom had gotten into an argument relative to Palieasei’s new boyfriend Jeremy Gamboa; the argument occurred in the company of Jeremy Gamboa and his brother Jerald Gamboa, a woman, and “AJ” who is thought to be Gumataotao.”

After the argument, Palieasei told police that he informed the group he was aware of a store that would be easy to break into.
“Everyone agreed to break into the store, according to Palieasei, but only he, Jerald Gamboa and AJ left to go to the store,” court documents stated.
Gumataotao meanwhile told police that it was he and Jerald Gamboa who burglarized the store. “Gumataotao kicked open the glass door after Jerald Gamboa shattered the glass,” court documents stated. “Jerald Gamboa then started handing items to Gumataotao who placed the items in shopping carts.”
The suspects then took the shopping carts to the rugby field to share in the spoils of the burglary. Court documents do not indicate whether the woman was apprehended, and the group of suspects indicated that by the time they brought in the stolen goods, “Tom” had left.
Jeremy Gamboa, Palieasei, Jerald Gamboa and Gumataotao face charges of theft by receiving; burglary; theft; criminal mischief; and criminal trespass. The individuals were charged yesterday in Superior Court. Read more here via Marianas Variety

Web Digging: A Luxury Hotel In China Is Being Built Almost Completely Underground

AN EXTRAORDINARY hotel is being built in a disused quarry near Shanghai. At the foot of the Tianmashan mountain, the InterContinental Shimao Wonderland will rise two floors above the top of the 100-metre rock face and another 16 storeys below ground level. The lowest of these levels, housing a restaurant, will actually be under water at the bottom of the quarry.
The architectural plans are futuristic, yet the 380-room hotel is expected to open by late 2014 or early 2015. Given how much work there is to do—CNN has an image of what the site currently looks like—those projections do seem rather bullish. But weve already seen how much hotel the Chinese can build in 15 days, so 2.5 years for this fantastical construction might suffice.
The design was the award-winning work of Atkins, a British firm of architects. Martin Jochman, the leader, has described the thinking behind it:
We drew our inspiration from the quarry setting itself, adopting the image of a green hill cascading down the natural rock face as a series of terraced landscaped hanging gardens. In the centre, we have created a transparent glass 'waterfall' from a central vertical circulation atrium connecting the quarry base with the ground level. This replicates the natural waterfalls on the existing quarry face.
No word there on what winds are supposed to fill the boats (see image), but I wouldn't be surprised to find provision for a warm southerly breeze included in the engineering specifications. Read more here via Business Insider

But these days some women are taking dieting to a new extreme by having a feeding tube inserted into their noses, which funnels a slow drip of liquid protein and fat (with no carbohydrates) through the esophagus into the stomach. Really... a feeding-tube diet?
Yes. Patients following the K-E (ketogenic enteral nutrition) diet wear a feeding tube in their nose for 10 days. The tube delivers 800 calories a day and promises the loss of 10 percent of the patient's body weight or up to 20 pounds. While it's new in the U.S., the technique has been used for years in Europe. And it's effective, Dr. Oliver Di Pietro tells ABC News. "Within a few hours your hunger and appetite go away completely, so patients are actually not hungry at all for the whole 10 days."
Do women say it works?
At least one satisfied customer of Dr. Di Pietro defends the K-E Diet. In March, Jessica Schnaider, 41, of Surfside, Fla., used it to lose 10 pounds so she could fit into the dress she hopes to wear at her June wedding. She had the tube pulled out two days early, because she had reached her goal, and didn't want to get too skinny.
Is the diet truly innovative?
Not really. Any method that involves cutting calories from 3,000 per day to 800 will lead to weight loss, Dr. Scott Shikora, the director of the Center for Metabolic Health and Bariatric Surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, tells The New York Times. "The novelty is, they shove a tube in your nose," he said.
So what are the cons?
It costs $1,500, for one thing, since patients must be supervised by a doctor. Plus, there's the matter of walking around with a tube in your nose, which makes this the "grossest" and most "disturbing" weight-loss fad to date, says Charlotte Cowles at New York. Sure, 70 percent of engaged women, according to one survey, want to lose weight — typically around 20 pounds — before their special day, but regular exercise and skipping dessert would be a healthier way to go about it. Even though some doctors warn that extreme low-calorie dieting can cause side effects, including kidney stones, dehydration, and headaches, says Jen Chung at Gothamist, desperate brides will likely still ignore the warnings. OH HELL YES. I asked my little lady to turn the pictures into an animated gif, but the angles make it look like there's a colored part in Edward that doesn't appear in Rufio. Like I said, that's just the angle. Great, now I kind of want a Rufio tattoo. "BANGARAAAAAANG!" *crowing* Okay now I f***ing have to have one.
