Chalk this up to super-creepy: scientists have discovered a way to mind-read personal secrets, such as bank PIN numbers and personal associations, using a cheap headset. Utilizing commercial brain-wave reading devices, often used for hands-free gaming, the researchers discovered that they could identify when subjects recognized familiar objects, faces, or locations, which helped them better guess sensitive information. Security interrogators could benefit most immediately from the new brain hacking technique, since it would reveal when suspects are actually familiar with the face of a potential accomplice. As for bank information, scientists could guess the first PIN number only 40% of the time. But, as brain-controlled devices become more common, the researches warn that viruses could discretely display images on a screen and help tech-savvy thieves narrow down their search for private information.
Brainwave-reading devices, which control computers hands-free, have become increasingly popular for entertainment, control of prosthetics for paralyzed individuals, and military application. The latest commercial versions of brain-reading devices, often used by researchers and software developers, can cost as little as $300 (the product pictured above is the “Emotiv“).
So, in the eerily titled, “On the Feasibility of Side-Channel Attacks with Brain-Computer Interfaces,” a team of researchers from Oxford, Berkeley, and Geneva tested the liklihood that hackers could hijack the device and attempt to uncover sensitive information.
“More specifically, we are interested in understanding how easily this technology can be turned against its users to reveal their private information, that is, information they would not knowingly or willingly share,” wrote the researchers.
Participants were outfitted with commercial-grade brain-wave reading devices and shown a list of people, possible PIN numbers, and the likely location of their home. Often, when the researchers stumbled upon the actual information they were seeking, they saw an expected spike in brain-wave P300, which is known to activate when presented with familiar information. Researchers could guess the correct answer for participants’ first PIN number 20% of the time, the regional location of their home 30%, birth month 60%, and the bank branch of their ATM 30%.
With refinement, the researchers imagine that the brain-hacking technique will get more accurate. For instance, when trying to identify a persons home, “we envision possible future attacks in which the true geo- graphic location of a user is leaked by showing maps or landmarks with increased accuracy.”
For now, the most immediate benefit is for law enforcement interrogation (which is essentially a guessing game). This new technique would reveal, with higher probability, when a subject actually recoginizes the face of a potential accomplice.
But, of course, the applications are endless. Brands could use it to identify the mass-market awareness of a particular product. Facebook could identify whether users actually know the people they recommend under the “people you may know” section. Michelle Obama has graced magazine covers from Time to People to Vogue looking powerful, beautiful, and downright regal, but now a Spanish magazine is picturing her bare breasted, and as a slave.

The cover of Magazine Fuera de Serie, which is widely available in Spain as a newspaper lifestyles supplement, shows the first lady's face superimposed onto an 1800 portrait of a female slave by Marie-Guillemine Benoiste, a French neoclassical painter.
According to the magazine's editor, the picture is meant to honor Michelle Obama who they call the "gran mujer" (great woman) who "conquered the heart" of the man who would be president and "seduced the American people."
Many commentators aren't seeing it that way. "Let's be clear: This image has nothing to do with acknowledging Obama's enslaved foremothers, and everything to do with reinforcing and extending the historical denial of black women's individuality…" writes Althea Legal-Miller for The Clutch. She continues "The portrait robs Obama of her identity, voice, and intellect, and visually shackles her to a politically passive subject, resigned to an assigned role as slave." The Frisky writer Jessica Wakeman calls it "plain old tasteless."
Some art historians describe the original painting as a tribute to emancipation in France, which occurred in 1794 and also as a feminist statement linking the universal bondage of women to the institution of slavery. Benoiste was one of the few established female artists of her era. The reality is, the majority of people today who encounter the image will have little knowledge of its art historical significance. Instead they will simply see the first lady of the United States as a half nude servant. Accompanied by the headline, "Michelle, Granddaughter of a Slave, Lady of America" it's more of a willfully ignorant attention-grab designed to spark controversy (and magazine sales) than a legitimate homage.
This is not the first time a magazine cover featuring Mrs. Obama has garnered accusations of racism. In 2008, the New Yorker published a satirical drawing of her decked out as a radical Black Panther fist bumping with her husband who is wearing a traditional Muslim robe.

Karine Percheron-Daniels, the artist who created the image, isn't shedding any light on its underlying message. She is quoted saying she depicted the first lady in such a manner "for obvious reasons." She adds, "I'm sure [she] would love it, and I hope that someday she can see it." PERRY HALL, Md. — A 15-year-old student opened fire on the first day of classes Monday at a Baltimore County high school, getting off two shots and wounding a classmate before being rushed by teachers, authorities said.
Investigators do not believe the victim, a 17-year-old male, was targeted by the shooter, a 15-year-old who is also a student at Perry Hall High School, Baltimore County Police Chief James Johnson said. The 15-year-old boy was taken into custody after the shooting and was cooperating with investigators, police said. Police took the weapon, although they did not say what kind of gun it was.
Johnson said at about 10:45 a.m., a student walked into the cafeteria and pulled out a gun. He fired one shot before being grabbed by teachers, and then another shot went off as teachers grabbed him, Johnson said.
Johnson said the shooter acted alone. He did not answer numerous questions from reporters about a motive.
Baltimore County State's Attorney Scott Shellenberger said it was too early to know what charges the shooter would face. Police said they would work with prosecutors to determine whether he would be charged as an adult.
The victim remained in critical condition at Maryland Shock Trauma Center on Monday evening, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Jordan Coates, a 17-year-old student who was in the cafeteria at the time of the shooting, said the student used a shotgun. Coates said he watched teachers, including guidance counselor Jesse Wasmer, pin the student against a vending machine.
"My back was to the door. I heard a pop and thought it was a bag because people do that, but then I heard another one," Coates told The Associated Press. "And I turned around and a teacher had a kid pinned up against the vending machine, and I saw the barrel, and another shot goes off and people just start running."
Coates credited Wasmer with helping to stop the shooting, and numerous students took to Twitter to thank him.
"He grabbed the gun from the kid and got him" until other teachers came over, Coates said.
Kelsey Long, a junior at Perry Hall who was in the cafeteria, said she also thought the first gunshot was someone popping a bag.
"But then we heard it again and again and everyone started screaming and ran out to the front of the school," Long told The Associated Press in a Twitter message.
Detectives were interviewing the suspected shooter Monday afternoon, Baltimore County police spokeswoman Elise Armacost said. Officers spent several hours searching the school and found no other weapons or suspicious materials, she said.
Although no one other than the 17-year-old was shot, several people suffered cuts and bruises in the ensuing melee, Armacost said.
"We have some heroic and brave faculty members," Schools Superintendent Dallas Dance said. "They responded very quickly to minimize damage."
Seth Warner, a youth pastor at the Faith Fellowship Church across from the high school who graduated in 1999 with Wasmer, said he was not surprised to hear that the guidance counselor had intervened. He described Wasmer as "not big, but built."
"I knew that if anyone could take him down, it would be Jesse," Warner said.
The school was evacuated, and students were escorted to a nearby shopping center and middle school.
Perry Hall is a middle-class community along the Interstate 95 corridor, northeast of Baltimore city. The school is the largest in the county, with 2,200 students.
County Councilman David Marks, who lives next door to the school, said he had received dozens of phone calls and text messages from worried parents and residents.
"This is a very comfortable, very safe community, and it's an excellent high school," said Marks, who graduated from Perry Hall. "I think this is an aberration, but clearly one that is horrifying, particularly on the first day of school."
Police planned to provide additional security when the school reopens on Tuesday, and stress counselors were called in to work with students, faculty and staff.
Television coverage showed scores of police cars surrounding the school and parked on neighborhood streets. A group of officers with weapons drawn staked out a corner of the building, one of them lying prone on the ground and appearing to cover a particular area of the campus. Hundreds of students streamed away from the school.
Cathy Le, 15, said students were panicking as they tried to find out what was happening. They texted and called each other frantically as they were locked in their classrooms for more than an hour, she said.
At the scene, buses, emergency vehicles and parents in cars filled the roadway between the high school and the shopping center. There were obvious signs of relief displayed as parents found their children.
Kristin Kraus, whose son James attends the school, described hearing about the shooting as "absolute terror." However, Kraus said, "within a couple of minutes he texted my husband that he was OK." Via Huffington Post

Anal tattoos are the "next big thing."
Or, at least, that's what some people are saying after meeting this woman at the 17th annual South Florida Tattoo Expo, which was held at the Marriott Hotel, Golf Club & Convention Center in Coral Springs, Fla., last weekend.
It felt "really, really good," the 22-year-old said of the process.
One observer noted that the whole anus-tattooing thing seemed pretty "cool."
"It's kind of a neat thing to do," he told a reporter from the New Times Broward-Palm Beach.
Users on social news site Reddit were quick to pick up on this "trend."
Many appeared to disagree, however, that anal tats are a good idea, and few were able to stay away from the seemingly requisite bathroom humor that comes with the territory.
"Holy crap that's funny," said user sujin.
The girl was quick to point out that her anus tat isn't her first.
"The fairy on my back is crawled in a ball with broken wings and she's pulling her f*cking hair," she said of one of her older tattoos.
As for her anus, it has since been inscribed with her boyfriend's name, though his might not be the first to adorn her rectal area.

Solo said in a statement she had been prescribed a pre-menstrual medication and was not aware it contained any banned substances. She cooperated with the USADA and provided them with the necessary information to prove that it was a mistake. Her story checked out and she was cleared with a public warning. Web Digging: Michael Bay’s TMNT Script Has Leaked, Confirms Worst Fears

After it was announced that Michael Bay would be in charge of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and the subsequent “alien” debacle, fans of the franchise were up in arms over what they feared would be a butchering of the source. Well, if the blog TMNT, NOT TANT is to be believed about the authenticity of a script they managed to get their hands on, all those concerns have been validated: The script is particularly awful in depressingly specific ways.
The veracity of the blog’s account is thrown into question because, after all, it’s obviously biased against Bay’s version of the franchise. However, they did link to a full version of the script — and, supposedly, Paramount sent out a cease and desist to have it removed. As such, the full script is no longer available for the viewing public, but the Internet never forgets. It’ll turn up sooner or later.
In the meantime, many folks took to chopping out the most offending bits to share their vitriol with friends. The shenanigans are hard to believe, with a number of people suggesting this is all an elaborate hoax. The script, as presented, is truly a travesty, however. Don’t believe me? If it is, in fact, the actual draft that was rejected and caused the production of the next TMNT movie to be pushed back to 2014 because the script was unsatisfactory, then I think all true TMNT fans should be grateful to the new “powers that be” that they did not allow this wretched thing to go any further. It could definitely be taken as a good sign if that is the case.
It reminds me of one of the reasons I am glad to not own the property anymore… because I don’t have to tear what little hair I have left out while trying to fix junk like this. — PL

After it was announced that Michael Bay would be in charge of a new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, and the subsequent “alien” debacle, fans of the franchise were up in arms over what they feared would be a butchering of the source. Well, if the blog TMNT, NOT TANT is to be believed about the authenticity of a script they managed to get their hands on, all those concerns have been validated: The script is particularly awful in depressingly specific ways.
The veracity of the blog’s account is thrown into question because, after all, it’s obviously biased against Bay’s version of the franchise. However, they did link to a full version of the script — and, supposedly, Paramount sent out a cease and desist to have it removed. As such, the full script is no longer available for the viewing public, but the Internet never forgets. It’ll turn up sooner or later.
In the meantime, many folks took to chopping out the most offending bits to share their vitriol with friends. The shenanigans are hard to believe, with a number of people suggesting this is all an elaborate hoax. The script, as presented, is truly a travesty, however. Don’t believe me? Remember the story I posted last year about millionaire Johan Huibers building a full size "biblical-scale" replica of Noah's ark after dreaming his homeland of Holland flooded? Well now it's complete, and ready to set sail for safety in the event of global warming. *eying proportions* Fine, but there better be room for dinosaurs this time.
The ark described in the Book of Genesis measured to 300 cubits long, 50 cubits wide, and 30 cubits high. A cubit is supposed to be the distance of a man's arm from the elbow to the fingertips, so Huibers used his own arm and his ark came to be around 450 feet long, according to Sky News.
This wooden recreation, four years in the making, is the second one he's built. In 2004, he built a half-scale version that he sailed around his native country's canals, ChannelsTV.com reported.
Now listen, before you run to the comments to spout off about religion or anti-religion or whatever, let me make one thing perfectly clear: I DON'T CARE. You can practice or not practice and believe or not believe whatever the hell you want as far as I'm concerned AS LONG AS IT DOESN'T AFFECT ANYBODY ELSE. Black magic? Go for it. Besides, you're not seeing the bigger picture here. The completion of this ark is a real OPPORTUNITY.
